Browsers and Technology
Here you will find questions about surfing the World Wide Web.
A browser acts like a type of signpost and is a navigation aid to Internet users searching for specific information, thanks to the graphic design of the screen surface. The most popular browsers are Microsoft Explorer and Netscape Communicator.
Our Web site is optimized for the following browsers:
Internet Explorer (from version 6.0) and Netscape (from version 7.0)
Please note that in order to attain optimal display and perfect functioning of this Web site, the following browser functions must be enabled:
The various Internet browsers available operate differently depending on the particular version and manufacturer. Generally, it is advisable to use the latest versions to ensure that the Web sites accessed can be displayed. You will find appropriate browser software on the CD-ROMs included in many PC magazines.
It is the service-provider that enables Internet access.
Many people use the services of providers such as AOL, WEB and Cityweb.
A hyperlink is a highlighted text or image on a Web site, which, when clicked upon, calls up another document. It is also frequently called a "link".
Using this format, users can download and save documents, preferably text documents. The document's original form is maintained during transfer, e.g. via the Internet.
PC
Click the right mouse button (Windows only) and choose "Save Link As..." if you are using Netscape or "Save Target As..." in the context menu of Internet Explorer. The entire file will then be saved on your hard drive. You can then view the file with Acrobat Reader.
Mac
Click on the link using the mouse while simultaneously holding down the CTRL button, and, if using Netscape, select: "Save Link As..." or in Internet Explorer: "Save Target As...". The entire file will then be saved on your hard drive. You can then view the file with Acrobat Reader.
Accessibility
People with disabilities use the Internet a great deal. And they are repeatedly faced with technical access and navigation barriers specific to their disabilities.
This is why the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) established access guidelines in 1999 to provide easier access to the Internet and the information available on it for people with disabilities. These guidelines were also incorporated in the German Ordinance on Barrier-Free Information Technology (Barrierefreie Informationstechnik-Verordnung - BITV), implemented by the federal government in July 2002. The ordinance regulates the design and restructuring of public information sources in accordance with the Equal Opportunities for Disabled People Act (Behindertengleichstellungsgesetz - BGG).
In order to ensure unrestricted access to all information, accessible websites must fulfil a series of requirements in accordance with the BITV regarding content, design and technical aspects, which are divided into two levels of priority. The online Annual Report 2005 is barrier-free* as it meets the following criteria:
*Note:
Barrier-free design currently applies to the online Annual Report 2005 and the Sal. Oppenheim website in German and English.

Deposit protection of German private banks
What is the scope of investment protection at German private banks?
Thanks to the deposit protection scheme of the Federation of German Banks (BdB), the assets of every single customer of private banks are fully protected up to the level of 30% of the essentially liable equity of the respective bank at the time of the previously published annual financial statement. This protection covers all "non-bank investments"; in other words, the assets of private persons, business corporations and public authorities. The protected deposits primarily include demand, term and savings deposits as well as registered savings bonds.
Further information about the deposit protection scheme of the Federation of German Banks (BdB) and the institutions involved can be found at www.bdb.de.
Upon request, the Federation will also disclose the current protection limit of the member banks to all interested parties: http://www.bdb.de/html/verband/einlagensicherung.asp?channel=183210. For Sal. Oppenheim jr. & Cie. KGaA. Bank, the protection limit currently stands at EUR 475,032,000 per customer (status: May, 18th 2006).
